The Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery for this year will officially commence on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. EDT, and the entrance period will close on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at 12:00 p.m., the U.S. State Department stated this week. Starting on May 6, 2023, 55,000 visa applications will be chosen. The State Department warns applicants that submitting more than one entry will void all of that person's submissions.

Only electronic applications may be filed through the official Department of State website. The Department has urged people to register for the lottery early and reminded the general public that there is no registration fee. Applicants must keep all records pertaining to the completion When the results of the random lottery are made available in May 2023, applicants should keep all documentation related to the completion of registration in a secure location for future reference.

The information needed to apply to the 2023 DV-Lottery Program is provided below.

Can anyone apply?

All nationalities are eligible to apply, with the exception of those from Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (including Hong Kong SAR), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea (South Korea), United Kingdom (with the exception of Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, Venezuela, and Vietnam.

Please be aware that Taiwanese and Macau SAR residents are both eligible.

The program is designed to draw people from nations with historically low rates of immigration to the United States.

A high school diploma or its equivalent is necessary, as is two years of work experience within the previous five years in a profession that calls for two years of education or experience.

Your photo is a vital part of your visa application. To learn more, review the information below on how to provide a suitable photo. Digital images are required for some visa categories, while photos are required for other visa categories. The acceptance of your digital image or photo is at the discretion of the U.S. embassy or consulate where you apply.

We recommend you use a professional visa photo service to ensure your photo meets all the requirements.

 

Your photos or digital images must be:

  • In color
  • Sized such that the head is between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (22 mm and 35 mm) or 50% and 69% of the image's total height from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. View the Photo Composition Template for more size requirement details.
  • Taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance
  • Taken in front of a plain white or off-white background
  • Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera
  • With a neutral facial expression and both eyes open
  • Taken in clothing that you normally wear on a daily basis
  • Uniforms should not be worn in your photo, except religious clothing that is worn daily.
  • Do not wear a hat or head covering that obscures the hair or hairline, unless worn daily for a religious purpose. Your full face must be visible, and the head covering must not cast any shadows on your face.
  • Headphones, wireless hands-free devices, or similar items are not acceptable in your photo.
  • Eyeglasses are no longer allowed in new visa photos, except in rare circumstances when eyeglasses cannot be removed for medical reasons; e.g., the applicant has recently had ocular surgery and the eyeglasses are necessary to protect the applicant's eyes. A medical statement signed by a medical professional/health practitioner must be provided in these cases. If the eyeglasses are accepted for medical reasons:
    • The frames of the eyeglasses must not cover the eye(s).
    • There must not be glare on eyeglasses that obscures the eye(s).
    • There must not be shadows or refraction from the eyeglasses that obscures the eye(s). 
  • If you normally wear a hearing device or similar articles, they may be worn in your photo.

Review the Photo Examples to see examples of acceptable and unacceptable photos. Photos copied or digitally scanned from driver’s licenses or other official documents are not acceptable. In addition, snapshots, magazine photos, low quality vending machine or mobile phone photos, and full-length photographs are not acceptable.

How to Use.

Between Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. EDT and Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. EDT, entries for the 2023 DV-Lottery Program must be submitted. Only electronic entries are permitted for this round. The Department of State advises that any business or website charging a fee for the submission is false because there is no fee associated with the filing. Submissions can be made at DVPROGRAM.STATE.GOV.

When Will Winners Be Announced?

a random sample of Computerized individual applications will be made from among qualified submissions starting on May 6 and running until September 30 of 2024. Beginning May 6, 2023, participants can check their status on the 'entrant status webpage' and the E-DV website at dvprogram.state.gov. Please be aware that submitting more than one application will result in the disqualification of one applicant. All members of the family may, however, enter the lottery if they all meet the requirements in a family setting.
